PVC Welding Rods — Selection and Usage Guide

Published date 07 October, 2026 | Author Admin

PVC welding rods are the filler material used to join rigid PVC sheets and fittings by hot-gas welding. They are essential for fabricating chemical tanks, fume ducts, scrubbers, plating baths and repair work on PVC equipment. Choosing the right rod profile and size, and using correct technique, gives welds that are strong, leak-tight and chemically resistant.

Match the Rod to the Sheet

The welding rod must be the same polymer as the parts being joined. PVC rods are used for PVC-U sheets, and PVC-C rods for PVC-C. Matching the colour, usually grey, also gives a neat finished appearance. Using a mismatched polymer, such as a PP rod on PVC sheet, will not fuse properly and the weld will fail.

Rod Profiles and Sizes

  • Round rods: the most common profile, typically 3 mm, 4 mm and 5 mm diameter, used for general fillet and butt welds.
  • Triangular rods: fill V-groove and fillet joints efficiently, reducing the number of passes.
  • Twin rods: two rods joined side by side for wider seams.

Choose rod diameter according to sheet thickness and joint size. Thicker sheets need multiple passes or larger profiles. Rods are supplied in coils or straight lengths.

Hot-Gas Welding Methods

Tack Welding

A tacking nozzle fuses the joint edges lightly to hold parts in position before the main weld.

Pendulum Welding

The rod is fed by hand while the torch is moved in a fanning motion to heat both rod and base material. It suits slow work and difficult positions.

Speed Welding

A speed nozzle preheats the rod and base material and guides the rod, producing faster and more uniform welds on straight runs.

Welding Good Practice

  • Prepare the joint: bevel edges for butt welds, and clean surfaces of oil, dust and oxidised material by scraping.
  • Set temperature and air flow: follow the welding equipment and rod supplier’s recommendations for PVC. Overheating causes discolouration and degradation; underheating leaves an unfused bond.
  • Apply steady pressure: press the rod into the joint at the correct angle so it fuses without stretching.
  • Allow cooling: let welds cool naturally; do not quench with water.
  • Ventilate: overheated PVC releases harmful fumes, so work in a ventilated area with correct temperature control.

Checking Weld Quality

  • A good weld shows a small, even bead on both sides of the rod, which indicates fusion.
  • Brown or black discolouration indicates overheating.
  • A rod that can be peeled away indicates insufficient heat or pressure.
  • Tanks and ducts in chemical service may be spark-tested or leak-tested according to the project specification.

Applications

  • Chemical storage and process tanks
  • Fume extraction ducts and hoods
  • Electroplating, anodising and pickling lines
  • Water treatment equipment
  • Repairs to PVC pipework supports and fabricated parts

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use PVC welding rods on PP sheets?

No. The rod must be the same polymer as the sheet. Use PP rods for PP and PVC rods for PVC.

What diameter PVC welding rod should I use?

Round rods of 3 to 5 mm are common; choose according to sheet thickness and joint size, using multiple passes on thicker sheets.

Why is my PVC weld turning brown?

Brown or black discolouration indicates the hot-air temperature is too high or the torch is held too long in one place.
