Neoprene Rubber Gasket Sheet: Properties, Uses and Selection

Published date 30 October, 2026 | Author Admin
Neoprene rubber gasket sheet

Short answer: Neoprene (chloroprene rubber, CR) is a
general-purpose synthetic rubber with a balanced mix of weather, ozone,
moderate oil and flame resistance. Neoprene sheet is used for gaskets,
pads, seals, covers and vibration isolation where conditions are
moderate. It is not the best for strong oils or strong acids.

Key properties

  • good resistance to weather, sunlight and ozone
  • moderate resistance to oils, fuels and many chemicals
  • good flexing and ageing behaviour
  • inherent flame-resistant character compared with many rubbers
  • good abrasion and tear resistance
  • a wide hardness range

Limits

  • not as oil resistant as nitrile (NBR)
  • not as good for hot water and steam as EPDM
  • poor against strong oxidising acids and some solvents
  • more costly than basic SBR

Typical uses

Application Why neoprene
Gaskets for covers and doors Weather and moderate oil resistance
Pads under equipment Cushioning and vibration reduction
Seals in outdoor equipment Ozone and sun resistance
Protective sheeting Tear resistance
HVAC and refrigeration Balanced properties

Selecting neoprene sheet

  1. Hardness (Shore A): softer for sealing uneven
    surfaces, harder for load-bearing pads.
  2. Thickness: thicker for cushioning and rough
    surfaces.
  3. Reinforcement: plain sheet or fabric-reinforced
    sheet for strength.
  4. Fluid contact: check oil, fuel and chemical
    exposure.
  5. Colour and finish: black is standard; other colours
    exist.

Cutting and fitting

Neoprene sheet can be cut with a sharp knife, die or water jet.
Gaskets are cut to the cover or flange outline. Use adhesives made for
neoprene if the sheet must be bonded. Store the sheet flat or in rolls
away from direct sunlight and heat.

Neoprene compared with
other rubbers

  • vs NBR: NBR resists oil and fuel much better;
neoprene resists weather and ozone better.
  • vs EPDM: EPDM is better for water, steam and
weather; neoprene is better when oils are present.
  • vs SBR: neoprene performs better in weather and
    oil, but costs more.

See NBR sheets and EPDM guide.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • using neoprene in strong mineral oil where NBR is better
  • picking a sheet that is too hard to seal a rough surface
  • leaving rolls under heavy weight, which deforms them
  • using it in hot steam
  • skipping the datasheet for critical gaskets

Questions to ask your
supplier

What is the Shore hardness and thickness tolerance? Is the sheet
plain or fabric reinforced? Can it be supplied in rolls or cut sheets?
What are the temperature and chemical limits for the grade?

Ordering tips

State sheet or roll, thickness, width, hardness and whether fabric
reinforcement is needed. For gaskets, send the drawing or sample.
Mention the fluid or weather exposure, so the supplier can confirm
neoprene is the right rubber.

Handling and storage

Store neoprene sheet flat or in rolls in a cool, dry place away from
direct sunlight, ozone sources such as electric motors and heat. Keep it
clear of oils and solvents. Do not stack heavy loads on rolls, because
they can flatten. Rotate stock so older sheet is used first.

Selecting hardness

As a rough guide, softer sheet seals rough or uneven surfaces with
low bolt load, while harder sheet is better for load-bearing pads and
for resisting extrusion. Share how the sheet will be compressed, and we
can suggest a hardness. For critical gaskets, ask for the hardness and
compression data on the datasheet.

FAQ

What is neoprene rubber used for? Gaskets, pads,
seals and protective sheeting.

Is neoprene oil resistant? Moderately. NBR is better
for strong oils.

Is neoprene weatherproof? It has good weather and
ozone resistance.

Can neoprene sheet be cut to size? Yes. Send your
drawing or dimensions.
