Nylon (PA) Sheets and Rods: Types, Uses and What to Watch For

Published date 30 October, 2026 | Author Admin
Nylon sheets and rods

Short answer: Nylon (polyamide, PA) is a tough,
wear-resistant engineering plastic used for gears, bushes, rollers, wear
plates and liners. It is easy to machine and has good impact strength,
but it absorbs moisture, which changes its size and stiffness, so it
needs allowance in the design.

Nylon is one of the most common plastics used to replace metal parts.
It slides well, is quiet, resists abrasion and does not rust.

Common types

  • PA6 and PA66: extruded nylons used for general
    machined parts.
  • Cast nylon (PA6 cast): poured into moulds,
available in large sizes and heavy sections, often used for large gears,
    rollers and wear parts.
  • Filled and modified grades: options include
oil-filled, molybdenum disulphide filled and glass-filled grades for
    lower friction or higher stiffness.

The grade names and properties differ, so confirm the grade on the
datasheet.

What nylon is good at

  • wear and abrasion resistance
  • toughness and impact resistance
  • low noise and vibration damping
  • resistance to oils, greases and many fuels
  • good machinability

What to watch for

  • Moisture absorption: nylon takes up water from air,
which makes it swell slightly and reduces stiffness. For close-tolerance
parts, allow for this, or choose a more stable material such as POM or
    PET.
  • Heat: nylon softens at higher temperatures and
    creeps under load.
  • Chemicals: strong acids and some oxidisers attack
    it.
  • UV: unprotected outdoor exposure can degrade it, so
    ask about stabilised grades.

Typical uses

Application Why nylon
Gears and sprockets Quiet, tough, wear resistant
Bushes and bearings Self-lubricating grades available
Rollers and wheels Impact and wear resistance
Wear pads and slides Low friction against steel
Conveyor parts Light and corrosion free

Machining tips

Use sharp tools, avoid overheating and take light cuts. For close
tolerances, allow the stock to stabilise in the working environment
before final machining.

Choosing between
nylon and similar plastics

If the part sees wet conditions and needs fine tolerance, consider
POM or PET. If abrasion is the main problem, compare UHMWPE. See nylon vs POM.

Nylon in outdoor and wet
service

If nylon parts are used outdoors in Saudi Arabia’s sun, ask for a
UV-stabilised grade, since sunlight and heat can embrittle ordinary
nylon over time. In wet service, expect small dimensional growth and
design clearances to suit. For repeat parts, record the size you machine
them to once the stock has settled in service, so later batches
match.

Designing around moisture

Nylon takes up moisture slowly, and the part grows a little as it
does. For a gear or bush with a close fit, leave running clearance, and
do not press-fit nylon tightly into a housing that you will use in humid
or wet conditions. If a part must be machined to a tight tolerance,
machine it close to size, let it settle in a similar environment to its
working condition, then finish. For parts in water or high humidity,
compare POM, PET or UHMWPE.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • using nylon for outdoor parts without a UV-stabilised grade
  • designing tight tolerances without allowing for moisture
    swelling
  • choosing extruded nylon for a very thick, heavily loaded part where
    cast nylon is better
  • ignoring that nylon creeps under steady load

FAQ

What is nylon used for? Gears, bushes, rollers, wear
plates and many machined parts.

Does nylon absorb water? Yes. This changes its size
and stiffness, so allow for it in design.

What is cast nylon? Nylon cast in a mould, suited to
larger and thicker parts.

Is nylon better than metal? For wear, noise and
corrosion, often yes. For strength and heat, metal is better.
