PTFE Tube: Where It Is Used and How to Size It

Published date 30 October, 2026 | Author Admin
PTFE Teflon tube Saudi Arabia

Short answer: PTFE tube is a hollow Teflon tube used
where a part must resist chemicals, tolerate heat, slide with low
friction or insulate electrically. To order the right one, you need the
inside diameter, outside diameter or wall thickness, length, and the
fluid or environment it will see.

PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is chosen for jobs that ordinary
plastics and rubbers cannot survive. In tube form it appears in chemical
plants, laboratories, food and beverage lines, electrical assemblies and
machinery. Understanding what the tube must do makes choosing the size
and grade straightforward.

Common uses

  • Chemical transfer: PTFE does not react with most
acids, alkalis and solvents, so it is used for aggressive fluids.
  • Liners and sleeves: the tube can line a pipe or
protect a shaft, rod or hose from the process fluid.
  • Electrical insulation: PTFE is an excellent
insulator, so tube is used as sleeving over wire and terminals.
  • Bushes and spacers: a short length of tube machined
to size becomes a low-friction bush or spacer.
  • Laboratory work: inert and non-contaminating, it
    suits sample handling.

How to size a PTFE tube

Give the supplier these measurements, because tubes are identified by
them:

  1. Inside diameter (ID): the bore the fluid or rod
    passes through.
  2. Outside diameter (OD): the size that fits into a
    housing or clamp.
  3. Wall thickness: half the difference between OD and
ID. Thicker walls resist pressure and handling damage.
  4. Length: state the finished length and the tolerance
    you can accept.

Always say whether the tube must be used as supplied or machined
further. If you plan to machine, ask for extra wall so there is material
to cut.

Choose the grade

Virgin PTFE is the standard choice for chemical and food contact.
Filled grades (glass, carbon, bronze) are stiffer and wear less but
change chemical and electrical behaviour, so they suit mechanical parts
rather than liners. If food, medical or pharmaceutical contact is
involved, ask for the supporting documentation before ordering. See
PTFE grades guide for how the fillers differ.

Limits to keep in mind

  • PTFE can creep (slowly deform) under sustained load, so do not rely
on a thin wall to carry a heavy compressive load.
  • It is not a high-pressure tube on its own. For pressure service, the
design must be checked against the datasheet and, where needed,
    supported or reinforced.
  • It cannot be bonded with ordinary glues without surface
    treatment.
  • Its expansion with heat is larger than metals, which matters in
    tight fits.

Handling and storage

Keep tubes clean, away from sharp edges and stored flat or supported
along their length so they do not bow. Cut with a sharp blade or tube
cutter for a square end, and deburr the cut.

What to tell your supplier

  • ID, OD or wall, and length
  • Virgin or filled grade
  • Fluid, temperature and pressure
  • Machining required, and quantity

FAQ

What is PTFE tube used for? Chemical transfer,
liners, electrical insulation sleeves, bushes and laboratory work.

Is PTFE tube flexible? It is flexible in thin walls
and rigid in thick walls. Wall thickness decides how it behaves.

Can PTFE tube handle strong acids? It resists most
acids and solvents, but confirm your specific chemical and
temperature.

Can I machine PTFE tube? Yes, with sharp tools and
light cuts. Ask for extra wall to allow for machining.

Can Diode supply cut lengths? Send your sizes and
quantity and we will confirm.
