Silicone Rubber Gasket Sheet: Properties, Uses and Selection

Published date 30 October, 2026 | Author Admin
Silicone rubber gasket sheet

Short answer: Silicone rubber is a flexible rubber
that keeps its elasticity across a wide temperature range, resists
weather, ozone and ageing, and is available in food-contact grades.
Silicone sheet is used for gaskets, seals, insulation and covers in
ovens, food equipment, electrical gear and outdoor equipment. It is
weaker in tear and abrasion and not suited to strong oils.

Key properties

  • stays flexible from very low to high temperatures
  • excellent resistance to weather, ozone and UV
  • good electrical insulation
  • low compression set in many grades, so it keeps its seal
  • food and medical-type grades available (check the specific
    grade)
  • non-stick and easy to clean

Limits

  • lower tear strength and abrasion resistance than many rubbers
  • poor resistance to many oils, fuels and solvents
  • not for use with steam in some grades, so check the grade
  • higher cost than general rubbers

Typical uses

Application Why silicone
Oven and heater door gaskets Heat stability
Food and beverage equipment Food-contact grades, easy cleaning
Electrical enclosures Insulation and weather resistance
Outdoor covers and seals UV and ozone resistance
Vacuum and press pads Flexible and non-stick

Choosing silicone sheet

  1. Temperature: confirm the continuous and peak
    temperature for the grade.
  2. Hardness: softer for sealing, harder for load.
  3. Thickness: as required by the joint.
  4. Food or medical contact: ask for the right grade
    and documents.
  5. Colour: red, white, translucent and other colours
    exist, often tied to grade.
  6. Reinforcement: fibreglass-reinforced silicone gives
more strength for pad and gasket use.

Cutting and fitting

Silicone cuts cleanly with a sharp blade or die. It can be bonded
with silicone adhesives. Take care not to stretch or tear it, since tear
strength is limited. Do not use silicone where oil or fuel contacts the
gasket.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • using silicone in oil or fuel service
  • choosing a general-purpose grade for food contact without
    documents
  • using too thin a sheet in a high-compression joint
  • expecting silicone to take abrasion
  • forgetting the post-cure that some grades require for food use

Questions to ask your
supplier

What are the temperature limits and hardness? Is the grade
food-contact, and what documents come with it? Is the sheet plain or
reinforced? What is the thickness tolerance? Can sheets be cut to
shape?

Getting a quotation

Send a short brief with your sizes, quantity, and delivery location
in Saudi Arabia, and we will reply with availability, lead time and a
quotation. If you are unsure of the right grade, describe the working
conditions and we will help you choose.

Handling and storage

Keep silicone sheet clean and away from oils, which can contaminate
it. Store flat or in rolls without heavy loads. Silicone attracts dust,
so wrap it in clean film. Cut gaskets with a sharp blade to avoid ragged
edges.

Silicone grades at a glance

General industrial silicone suits ovens, doors and covers.
Food-contact grades are made from approved raw materials and often need
a defined post-cure; request documentation. Fibreglass-reinforced
silicone gives more strength and is used for pads, covers and insulation
blankets. Platinum-cured grades are used for the cleanest applications.
Tell us your use and we can suggest the grade family.

Typical questions on cost

Silicone costs more than general rubbers, so use it where its
temperature range, cleanliness or weather resistance is actually needed.
For plain water or air gaskets at normal temperature, a cheaper rubber
may be enough. Tell us the conditions and we will suggest the most
economical suitable material.

FAQ

What is silicone sheet used for? Gaskets, seals,
insulation and covers, including in ovens and food equipment.

Is silicone resistant to oil? Not generally. Use NBR
for oils.

Can silicone be used with food? Only food-contact
grades. Ask for documentation.

Is silicone reusable as a gasket? Often yes, if
undamaged, but inspect before reuse.
