PVC Sheets and PVC Welding Rods: Uses and Fabrication Guide

Published date 30 October, 2026 | Author Admin
Grey PVC sheets and rods – Diode Trading Saudi Arabia

Short answer: Rigid PVC sheet is a low-cost plastic
with good chemical resistance, used for tanks, ducts, linings, covers
and fabricated equipment. PVC welding rod joins PVC parts by hot-air
welding. It works at moderate temperatures only and is not for hot
service.

Why PVC is widely used

  • good resistance to many acids, alkalis and salts
  • rigid and strong for its cost
  • easy to cut, weld, bond and thermoform
  • does not corrode like steel
  • flame-retardant behaviour compared with many plastics

Limits

  • limited temperature range; it softens when hot
  • becomes brittle in cold if impact-loaded
  • attacked by some solvents such as ketones
  • some grades are not for long outdoor exposure without UV
    stabilisation

Typical uses

Application Why PVC
Chemical tanks and sumps Resists many chemicals
Ducts and fume extraction Corrosion free
Linings and covers Light and cleanable
Wall cladding in wet areas Hygienic and easy to clean
Fabricated components Easy to weld and bond

Welding PVC with rod

PVC parts are joined by hot-air (or hot-gas) welding with a matching
PVC filler rod.

  1. Match the rod to the sheet type and colour.
  2. Clean and bevel the joint.
  3. Heat the rod and the joint together with a welding gun at the
    temperature recommended for PVC.
  4. Press the rod into the joint steadily to fuse it.
  5. Let the weld cool before loading.

A good weld needs the right temperature, pressure and speed. Test
pieces before production work. Overheating burns PVC and produces
discolouration and weak joints.

Sheet types

  • Rigid grey PVC: common for industrial and chemical
    use.
  • White, black and other colours: for visual or
    hygiene needs.
  • Clear PVC: for guards and covers, with lower impact
    strength than polycarbonate.

PVC or other plastics?

For hotter or more aggressive chemical service, consider PVDF or PP.
For higher impact, consider polycarbonate. See PVDF guide and
polypropylene guide.

What to send

Form (sheet or rod), thickness, size, colour, application,
temperature and quantity. Diode Trading EST supplies PVC sheets and
welding rods in Saudi Arabia, and every order ships with a Material Test
Certificate. request a quote

Typical project examples

A chemical dosing area may need a PVC-lined bund and tank covers. A
laboratory may need PVC fume cupboard panels. A factory may need PVC
wall cladding in wash-down areas. In each case, a drawing and a list of
chemicals let a supplier propose a thickness and grade.

Safety and handling

Never burn or overheat PVC: it gives off hydrogen chloride fumes when
it decomposes, so weld in a ventilated area and keep the gun temperature
within the recommended range. Wear protective gloves when handling hot
welded parts. Cut with fine-tooth blades and deburr the edges. Store
sheets flat and shaded, with a protective film on the surface until
fabrication.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • using the wrong welding rod for the sheet type or colour, which
gives a weak or visibly different weld
  • welding too fast, so the rod only sits on the surface instead of
    fusing
  • forgetting that PVC becomes brittle in cold conditions
  • using PVC for hot chemical lines where PVDF or PP would last
    longer
  • skipping a test weld before the real job

Questions to ask your
supplier

Which PVC type is the sheet (grey, white, clear)? What is the
thickness tolerance? Is a matching welding rod available in the same
colour and type? Is the sheet stabilised against UV if it will be
outdoors?

FAQ

What is PVC sheet used for? Tanks, ducts, linings,
covers and fabricated parts.

Can PVC be welded? Yes, by hot-air welding with PVC
rod.

Is PVC chemical resistant? Against many chemicals,
but not all. Check your chemical.

Can PVC be used in hot service? Only to moderate
temperatures. Use another plastic for hot fluids.
