Short answer: A fire resistant conveyor belt is made so that it does not keep burning when a flame or a heat source is removed. It is used where a belt fire would be dangerous, such as coal handling and enclosed areas. It is not the same as a heat resistant belt. Always ask your supplier which fire test standard the belt meets and request the test evidence.
A belt fire is serious. Conveyor belts are long, they run through enclosed galleries and they can carry a fire from one end of a plant to the other. Coal is itself flammable, and friction from a stuck idler can create enough heat to start a fire. Fire resistant belts reduce the risk.
These two terms are often confused.
| Fire resistant | Heat resistant | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Resists burning and self-extinguishes | Survives hot material without ageing quickly |
| Problem solved | Fire risk from friction, sparks or flame | Hot material such as clinker or slag |
| How it is judged | Fire test standards | Temperature classes |
| Where | Coal handling, enclosed galleries, power plants | Cement, steel, foundry |
A belt can be heat resistant without being fire resistant, and the reverse. If your plant has both hot material and a fire risk, ask for both properties and have the supplier confirm them in writing.
Whether you must use a fire resistant belt depends on your site rules, your insurer and the standards that apply to your operation. Ask your HSE team which standard your site requires.
Fire resistant belts are tested against recognised standards. A commonly used laboratory flammability standard for conveyor belts is ISO 340. Other standards apply in specific industries and regions. Do not rely on a statement like “fire resistant” alone. Ask the supplier:
At Diode Trading EST, every order ships with a Material Test Certificate. If your site needs a specific fire test, tell us before ordering so we can confirm the match with the manufacturer.
Some fire resistant belts are also anti-static, which stops static electricity from building up on the belt surface. In coal and dusty environments this reduces the chance of a spark. Ask whether the belt you are considering is anti-static if it matters on your site.
Fire resistance is only part of the specification. You also need:
The belt is one layer of protection. Good practice includes:
It is a belt designed not to sustain a flame, so it should stop burning when the ignition source is removed. The exact claim depends on the test standard.
Often yes, but it depends on your site rules and the standard that applies. Check with your HSE team.
No. Heat resistant belts survive hot material. Fire resistant belts resist burning.
Ask which standard your site requires, then ask your supplier to confirm the belt meets it and to provide the test evidence.
Yes. Tell us the standard, size and duty and we will advise. Contact Diode Trading EST
