Construction Access Mats: A Site Checklist Before You Lay Them

Short answer: Before laying construction access mats, check the ground, the loads and the services underneath, plan drainage and edges, and set up regular inspections. Access mats protect the ground and keep heavy vehicles moving, but only if they are chosen and laid for the actual site conditions.

Construction sites are rarely tidy. Cranes, trucks, excavators and concrete pumps all need to move and work on ground that has not been prepared as a road. Access mats are a fast way to create a stable working surface for them. This checklist helps you use them well.

1. Understand what the mats must carry

List every vehicle and machine that will use the mats:

  • the heaviest vehicle and its loaded weight
  • the number of passes per day
  • whether vehicles turn, brake or reverse on the mats
  • whether a crane or lift will stand on the mats

Turning and braking put more stress on the mats than straight travel. Cranes put concentrated loads on a small area, and that is a job for outrigger pads under each outrigger, sized to the load.

2. Assess the ground

The mat spreads load, but the ground still has to carry it. Walk the site and note:

  • soft, sandy or reclaimed areas
  • areas that hold water
  • recent fill that has not compacted
  • slopes and edges

If you are unsure, assume the ground is weak. For heavy or critical work, get a geotechnical assessment. Our guide on ground bearing pressure for cranes explains how pressure and area relate.

3. Check for services and structures

Look for buried pipes, cables, culverts, manholes and basements. Heavy loads can damage services even when the mat spreads the weight. Mark them out, and ask the engineer whether extra protection is needed.

4. Plan drainage

Water under a mat can soften the ground and make mats unstable. Keep drainage paths open, avoid placing mats across ponding areas and repair any ruts that collect water.

5. Prepare the surface

Remove sharp debris, large rocks and vegetation. Fill deep holes and level the worst high spots. A reasonably smooth, firm surface will help mats lie flat and last longer.

6. Lay the mats properly

  • Lay panels tight, with edges aligned and connectors fully seated.
  • Overlap or ramp the entry and exit so wheels do not hit an exposed edge.
  • Keep mats out of tight turns where you can, or add extra mats at corners.
  • Do not leave gaps where a wheel can drop.

7. Protect edges and approaches

The edge of a mat is where the ground tends to fail first, because load shifts from a supported area to an unsupported one. Keep heavy vehicles away from unsupported edges, and mark the working width with cones or barriers.

8. Set up inspections

Inspect mats at the start of each shift for the first few days, then on a regular schedule. Look for:

  • tilted, sunken or rocking panels
  • cracks, chips and worn edges
  • loose connectors
  • sand or soil washed out from underneath

Remove damaged panels from service. A cracked mat gives less support than it looks.

9. Plan removal and storage

Lift mats carefully, clean them and check each one before storage. Stack them flat. Good handling keeps the mats usable for the next project.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are construction access mats?

Heavy-duty mats laid on the ground to create a stable surface for vehicles and machinery on construction sites.

Do access mats protect the ground?

They spread vehicle loads and reduce rutting and damage to the surface below.

Can I park a crane on access mats?

Only if the mats and the ground can carry the concentrated outrigger load. Use outrigger pads sized to the load.

How often should mats be inspected?

At the start of each shift during the first days of use, then regularly. Remove any damaged panel.
