Acrylic (PMMA) Sheets: Types, Uses and Fabrication Tips

Published date 30 October, 2026 | Author Admin
Clear acrylic sheets, rods and tubes

Short answer: Acrylic (PMMA) is a rigid, highly
transparent plastic used for signage, displays, glazing, covers and
light diffusers. It is clearer, more scratch resistant and weather
resistant than polycarbonate, but more brittle. Cast acrylic is best for
machining and fabrication, and extruded acrylic is more economical for
simple cutting and bending.

Cast and extruded acrylic

  • Cast acrylic: made in a mould. Generally harder,
with better optical quality and easier laser engraving, polishing and
machining. A common choice for signs, displays and detailed
    fabrication.
  • Extruded acrylic: made by pushing material through
a die. Thickness is more uniform and the price is typically lower. It
cuts well and bends at lower temperature, suiting simple jobs.

Key properties

  • excellent clarity and light transmission
  • good weather and UV resistance
  • stiff and lightweight
  • easy to cut, polish, drill and thermoform
  • available clear, coloured, opal and mirrored

Limits

  • more brittle than polycarbonate, so it can crack under impact or if
    over-tightened
  • it can scratch, though it is better than polycarbonate
  • certain solvents and cleaners can cause crazing (fine cracks)
  • not ideal for high temperature

Typical uses

Application Why acrylic
Signage and displays Clarity and polish
Glazing and covers Light weight, weather resistant
Light diffusers Even light transmission
Protective screens (low impact) Clear and cost effective
Models and fabrications Easy to work

Fabrication tips

  1. Keep the protective film on until the job is finished.
  2. Use sharp blades and slow feed rates to avoid chipping.
  3. Allow for thermal expansion; do not clamp tightly.
  4. Use solvent cement made for acrylic for strong, clear joints.
  5. Clean with mild soap and water and a soft cloth; avoid harsh
    solvents.
  6. For impact areas such as machine guards, use polycarbonate.

Choosing thickness

Thicker sheets resist bending and are needed for large unsupported
spans. Share the size, how it is supported and the load so the supplier
can suggest a thickness.

Acrylic in signage and
displays

For illuminated signs, opal acrylic spreads light evenly, while clear
acrylic is used for edge-lit panels and transparent covers. Colour
choice affects light transmission, so share the lighting you plan to
use. For large panels, choose a thicker sheet to avoid bowing, and fix
it with allowance for expansion.

Edges and finishing

Acrylic can be flame-polished or diamond-polished to a clear edge,
which is why it is common in displays. For sign work, cast acrylic cut
by laser gives a smooth edge. Keep drills sharp and use a slow feed so
the plastic does not chip, and for large holes, use a step drill
designed for plastic. Avoid sharp internal corners, which are where
cracks start.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • cleaning with abrasive cloths or harsh solvents
  • tightening fixing screws hard so the sheet cracks as it expands
  • using acrylic where impact is likely, instead of polycarbonate
  • mixing cast and extruded sheet and expecting the same behaviour in a
    joined piece

Questions to ask your
supplier

Is the sheet cast or extruded? What is the thickness tolerance? Is it
available in the colour or finish you need? Is a protective masking film
applied on both sides? What is the largest sheet size, so you can plan
cuts with minimum waste?

FAQ

What is the difference between cast and extruded
acrylic?
Cast is harder with better quality for fabrication.
Extruded is more uniform in thickness and cheaper.

Is acrylic stronger than glass? It is more impact
resistant than glass but less than polycarbonate.

Can acrylic be used outdoors? Yes, it has good
weather resistance.

Can acrylic be laser cut? Yes. Cast acrylic gives a
polished edge.
