PTFE Wear Strips and Guide Strips: How to Choose and Fit Them

Published date 30 October, 2026 | Author Admin
PTFE Wear Strips & Bronze

Short answer: A PTFE wear strip (guide strip) is a
flat or profiled strip fixed to a machine slide, guide or carrier so
moving parts glide on it instead of on bare metal. PTFE’s very low
friction cuts drag, noise and wear, and it needs little or no
lubrication. Choose a filled grade when the load or speed is high.

Machine slides, hydraulic cylinders, linear guides and conveyors all
rely on surfaces that move against each other. Without a sacrificial
wear surface, metal wears metal, causing scoring, noise and downtime. A
strip of PTFE is cheap to replace, protects the expensive parts and runs
smoothly.

Where wear strips are used

  • machine tool slideways and guides
  • hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders as wear bands
  • packaging and bottling machinery
  • conveyor chain and belt guides
  • doors, hatches and sliding covers
  • food machinery where lubrication is unwanted

Virgin or filled grade

Virgin PTFE has the lowest friction but wears faster and creeps under
load. Filled grades improve wear and creep resistance:

  • glass filled for general sliding
  • carbon filled for dry running
  • bronze filled for heavier loads

See filled PTFE guide for the differences. If the strip touches
food, check that the grade and documentation are suitable.

Sizing and profile

Specify the width, thickness and length, and whether the strip is
flat, grooved or has an adhesive backing. Etched PTFE is available on
one face so it can be bonded; ordinary PTFE does not bond to glue. If
the strip is held in a dovetail or a groove, give the groove dimensions
so the strip can be supplied to fit without extra machining.

Fitting tips

  1. Clean the mounting surface of oil and dirt.
  2. For bonded strips, use etched PTFE and the adhesive recommended for
    it.
  3. Where the strip is held in a groove, leave a little room for thermal
    expansion.
  4. Chamfer the leading edge so moving parts do not catch and peel the
    strip.
  5. Check that the mating metal surface is smooth, since a rough surface
    wears PTFE quickly.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • using virgin PTFE for a heavily loaded slide, which then creeps and
    loosens
  • gluing plain, un-etched PTFE and expecting the bond to hold
  • leaving no room for thermal expansion
  • mating the strip against a rough or scored surface
  • ignoring the side loads that can push the strip out of a shallow
    groove

Questions to ask your
supplier

Is the strip skived, moulded or extruded? Is it etched for bonding?
What is the thickness tolerance? Can it be supplied in long lengths or
cut to length? What grade is recommended for my speed and load?

Typical service conditions

Wear strips run best where speeds are moderate and the mating surface
is smooth and hard, such as ground or polished steel. In dusty
conditions, grit can embed in the strip and scratch the metal, so fit
wipers or covers where practical. In hot environments allow for
expansion, and in wet environments PTFE is unaffected by water, which is
why it is common on washdown machinery.

How to judge when to replace

Replace the strip when it is worn to about half its original
thickness, when it has deep scoring, or when the moving part starts to
shift sideways or bind. Keep a spare set for machines where downtime is
costly, and note the grade you fitted so the next order matches it.

FAQ

What is a PTFE wear strip? A low-friction strip
fixed to a slide or guide so parts glide on it instead of on metal.

Do PTFE wear strips need lubrication? Usually not,
which is why they suit dry or food environments.

Can I glue PTFE strips? Only if the strip is etched
for bonding and you use the right adhesive.

Which grade lasts longest? Filled grades generally
wear longer than virgin PTFE.
