PTFE Laboratory Items and Insulation Bushes: Uses and Selection

Published date 30 October, 2026 | Author Admin
PTFE Laboratory Items — Teflon Labware & Lab Components

Short answer: PTFE is used for laboratory items such
as beakers, stirrers, stoppers and tubing because it is chemically inert
and does not contaminate samples. It is also used for insulation bushes
and sleeves because it is an excellent electrical insulator that stays
stable in heat and moisture. Choose virgin PTFE for purity and
insulation.

PTFE in the laboratory

Laboratories handle strong acids, solvents and reagents that attack
glass, metal and ordinary plastics. PTFE resists nearly all of them and
has a non-stick surface, so residues rinse off easily. Typical items
include:

  • beakers, dishes and liners for digestion vessels
  • stirring rods and magnetic stirrer coatings
  • stoppers, seals, tubing and fittings
  • sample containers and tweezers

Because PTFE can be used across a wide temperature range, it can be
used in hot and cold processes. For high-purity analysis, use virgin
PTFE and keep items clean and separate for different samples to avoid
cross-contamination.

PTFE insulation bushes and
sleeves

An insulation bush or sleeve isolates a bolt, pin or terminal from a
metal panel or frame. PTFE is a very good electrical insulator, resists
heat and moisture, and does not crack as many other plastics do. It is
used in electrical panels, switchgear, heating elements, transformers
and instruments. Sleeves are tube sections that slip over a bolt or
conductor, and bushes are turned parts that fit through a hole. For
accurate fits, give the inside diameter, outside diameter and
length.

Virgin or filled?

Use virgin PTFE for laboratory and electrical insulation. Filled
grades such as carbon or bronze change the electrical and chemical
behaviour, so they are not suited to insulation or high-purity work. See
filled PTFE guide.

Cleaning and care

Clean PTFE items with suitable solvents or detergents and rinse well.
Avoid sharp tools that scratch the surface, as scratches can trap
residue. For critical analysis, follow your laboratory’s procedure for
cleaning and storing PTFE.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • using a filled grade where purity or insulation is needed
  • machining bushes without allowing for thermal expansion
  • using PTFE bushes under heavy, sustained pressure, where PTFE
    creeps
  • mixing items between samples without cleaning
  • over-tightening a bolt through a PTFE sleeve, which squeezes the
    PTFE thin

Questions to ask your
supplier

Can items be made to my drawing? Is the PTFE virgin and what
documentation is available? What tolerances can be held on bushes and
sleeves? Is the material suitable for my cleaning process?

Typical lab and electrical
sizes

Laboratory PTFE parts are usually small and precise, so give clear
dimensions and tolerances. Insulation bushes and sleeves are often made
in batches to the same size, so a drawing with one set of dimensions
covers many pieces. If you have an existing part, send it or a sample
for matching.

Handling and safety

PTFE is safe at normal working temperatures, but it should not be
heated above its limit, because overheating can release harmful fumes.
Keep the work area ventilated and follow the datasheet for temperature
limits.

FAQ

Why is PTFE used in laboratories? It is inert and
does not contaminate samples.

Is PTFE a good electrical insulator? Yes, one of the
best among plastics.

Can PTFE bushes carry load? Light load. For heavy
load, use a filled grade or a different design.

Can PTFE lab items be made to order? Send drawings
or sizes for a quote.
