Ground Protection Mat Calculator

Plan a temporary access road or crane platform in a minute. Enter the length and width of the area, choose the mat size and thickness, and the calculator shows how many mats and connectors you need, the area covered and the total weight to transport.

Estimate only. Mat weights assume HDPE at 0.95 g/cm³ (500 × 500 mm tiles: about 3.2 kg each). Connector count assumes 2 connectors per mat-to-mat joint. Our team will confirm thickness and layout for your load and ground conditions.

How the quantity is worked out

  • Mats along the road = road length ÷ mat length, rounded up.
  • Mats across the road = road width ÷ mat width, rounded up.
  • Total = along × across, plus your spare allowance for damage and layout changes.
  • Connectors = 2 per joint between neighbouring mats.

Which thickness do I need?

As a guide, 12.7 mm mats suit pedestrians and light vehicles, 15 mm mats suit trucks and mobile cranes up to about 80 tonnes, and 20–25 mm mats suit heavy cranes and drilling rigs. The right choice depends on the load and the ground. Send us your crane or vehicle details with Add to quote and our team will confirm.

Frequently asked questions

How many 8 × 4 ft mats do I need for a 100 m road?

A 100 m × 4 m road needs 41 mats along and 4 across, so 164 mats of 2440 × 1220 mm, or about 173 with a 5% spare.

Can the mats be laid on sand?

Yes. HDPE mats spread the load over soft ground such as sand, sabkha and wet soil, which is common on sites in the Eastern Province.
