Outdoor Event Flooring in Saudi Arabia: A Planning Guide for Events and Stadiums

Short answer: Plan event flooring around three questions: who or what will use the surface (people, vehicles or equipment), what ground is underneath (grass, sand or hard surface), and how long it will stay down. Answering those tells you which flooring, how much and how it should be laid and removed.

Outdoor events in Saudi Arabia are growing. Festivals, sports fixtures, exhibitions and concerts all need temporary surfaces that are safe to walk on, strong enough for vehicles and kind to the ground underneath. Portable event flooring and turf protection mats do that job and can be lifted away afterwards.

What event flooring is for

  • Safe walking surfaces for visitors over sand, gravel, mud or uneven ground
  • Vehicle routes for service trucks, catering vehicles and staging equipment
  • Turf protection at stadiums and pitches so grass survives foot traffic and equipment
  • Stable bases for stages, tents and temporary structures

Step 1: Define the use areas

Draw the event layout and mark each zone:

  • Public walkways: the main visitor routes and entrances
  • Vehicle routes: deliveries, emergency access and equipment
  • Stage and structure areas: concentrated loads from staging, towers and tents
  • Turf areas: grass that must be protected

Each zone has a different requirement. A public walkway needs a safe, even, non-slip surface. A vehicle route needs a stronger mat. A stage base may need load spreading under legs and ballast.

Step 2: Understand the ground

Grass, sand, compacted gravel and asphalt behave differently.

  • Grass and turf: needs protection from compaction and tearing. Mats also need airflow and should not be left down longer than necessary, because grass under a covering weakens over time. Tell your supplier how long the flooring will be in place.
  • Sand: soft and loose, so loads need spreading and mats need to stay level.
  • Hard surfaces: need protection from point loads and scratches.

Step 3: Match flooring to the load

Pedestrians are light loads. Service vehicles and equipment are heavy. Cranes and lifts put very high loads through a small area. Do not use a walkway product for vehicles. Give your supplier the heaviest vehicle and equipment weights, and the number of passes expected.

Step 4: Plan for heat, dust and crowds

  • Heat: surfaces in direct summer sun can get very hot. Consider timing, shade, water points and surface colour.
  • Dust and sand: keep surfaces clear so they stay safe to walk on.
  • Crowds: edges and joints must not create trip hazards. Ramps and tapered edges help, and so does clear marking at changes in level.
  • Accessibility: plan routes that work for wheelchairs and prams, including smooth transitions.

Step 5: Plan installation and removal

Event schedules are tight. Ask:

  • How many people are needed to lay the floor?
  • How long will laying take, and when can the venue be accessed?
  • What equipment is needed to move the mats?
  • How will the flooring be lifted, cleaned and stored after the event?

Interlocking panels are quick to connect and quick to lift, which is useful when set-up and breakdown windows are short.

Step 6: Inspect during the event

Walk the routes before opening each day. Check connections, edges and any areas where the surface has shifted. Replace or repair damaged panels immediately.

Event flooring or trackway mats?

They overlap. Trackway mats are built for vehicles on a temporary road. Event flooring is chosen for visitors and mixed use. Many events use both, with trackway mats on vehicle routes and event flooring on walkways. See trackway mats guide.

What to send your supplier

  • Event type, venue and dates
  • Area to cover, with a simple layout
  • Ground type and whether grass must be protected
  • Heaviest vehicle or equipment
  • How long the flooring stays down
  • Set-up and breakdown time windows

Frequently Asked Questions

What is event flooring?

Portable flooring laid temporarily to create safe, stable surfaces for people, vehicles and equipment at events.

Can event flooring protect grass?

Turf protection mats are designed to reduce damage from foot traffic and equipment. Do not leave any covering on grass longer than needed, and tell your supplier the duration.

Can vehicles drive on event flooring?

Only if the product is rated for vehicles. Use trackway or heavy-duty mats on vehicle routes.

How do I know how much flooring I need?

Measure the area of each zone, then add allowances for overlaps and spares. Your supplier can confirm quantities from a layout.
