UHMWPE Wear Strips and Chain Guides: Selection Guide

Published date 09 October, 2026 | Author Admin

Short answer: UHMWPE wear strips and chain guides support and guide conveyor chains and belts with very low friction and excellent wear resistance. Choose the profile to fit the chain, the grade to suit the product and temperature, and fix the strips so they can expand and contract. Done right, UHMWPE wear strips and chain guides cut chain wear, noise and power use compared with steel.

Why UHMWPE for Chain Guides?

  • Low friction: chains slide easily, reducing drive load and chain wear.
  • Wear resistance: UHMWPE outlasts most plastics in sliding contact.
  • Quiet running: plastic-on-metal contact is much quieter than steel-on-steel.
  • No lubrication: runs dry, which suits food, beverage and packaging lines.
  • Corrosion-free: unaffected by water, washdown and most cleaning chemicals.

Common Profiles

Profile Typical use
Flat wear strip Supporting belts and chains on flat beds
Angle / L profile Side guides and edge support
U and T profiles Guiding roller chains and slat chains
Return-way guides Supporting the return side of the chain
Custom machined profiles Curves, transitions and special chains

Choosing the Grade

  • Natural (white) UHMWPE: general use and food lines.
  • Coloured or black UHMWPE: UV-stabilised or for visual identification.
  • Modified or filled grades: some include additives for lower friction or antistatic behaviour; confirm with the datasheet.
  • Food contact: specify food-compliant grades where the product touches the guide.

Thermal Expansion: The Most Common Mistake

UHMWPE expands and contracts far more than steel with temperature. In Gulf plants, a long strip fixed tightly at both ends can buckle on a hot day or pull fixings loose. Good practice:

  • Fix the strip firmly at one end only and use slotted holes elsewhere.
  • Leave expansion gaps between strip sections.
  • Use countersunk fixings below the wear surface.
  • Avoid long continuous lengths in direct sun.

Installation and Maintenance

  • Chamfer the leading edges so the chain does not catch.
  • Keep fixings below the wear surface, with allowance for wear depth.
  • Inspect for grooving and replace strips before fixings are exposed.
  • Keep abrasive dust off the running surface where possible.

UHMWPE vs Other Materials

Nylon and POM are stiffer but wear faster against abrasive dirt; PTFE has lower friction but is soft and expensive. For a full comparison, see POM vs nylon vs UHMWPE vs PTFE and UHMWPE vs HDPE. For bulk handling surfaces, see UHMWPE chute and hopper liners.

Diode Trading EST supplies UHMWPE chain guides and UHMWPE sheets and rods cut to size and machined to profile. For the full selection process, see our guide on how to choose engineering plastic. Every order from Diode Trading EST is supplied with a Material Test Certificate.

Checklist Before You Order

Send us the details below with your enquiry. They let us confirm the grade, the profile and the fixing method before cutting, and they avoid the most common reasons for early failure.

  • Chain or belt type: roller chain, slat-band chain, modular belt or flat belt, with pitch and width.
  • Profile: flat strip, angle, T-profile, U-channel or custom section, with a drawing or photo of the existing part.
  • Length and quantity: straight runs and any curved sections, plus the number of spares you want to hold.
  • Operating conditions: line speed, load, product (dry, wet, oily or abrasive), wash-down chemicals and ambient temperature.
  • Fixing: countersunk screws, rivets or clip-on, and the steel frame material.
  • Industry requirements: food contact, antistatic or coloured grades where needed.

With this information we can recommend virgin, reprocessed or additive-modified UHMWPE and supply strips drilled and slotted ready to install.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why use UHMWPE for conveyor chain guides?

It combines low friction, high wear resistance and quiet running, and needs no lubrication.

How should UHMWPE wear strips be fixed?

Fix firmly at one end and use slotted holes and expansion gaps elsewhere, because UHMWPE expands much more than steel.

Can UHMWPE chain guides be used in food plants?

Yes, using food-compliant grades.

When should a UHMWPE wear strip be replaced?

Before wear reaches the fixings. Check grooving depth during routine maintenance.
