How to Use Teflon Tape: Step-by-Step (Wrap Direction, Wraps and Mistakes)

Short answer: here is how to use Teflon tape in one line. Clean the male thread, leave the first thread bare, and wrap the tape clockwise as you look at the end of the pipe (the same direction the fitting turns when you tighten it), pulling it snug into the threads. Use about 2 to 3 wraps for small fittings, then screw the fitting on.

What You Need

  • Clean, dry male threads
  • PTFE thread seal tape suited to the fluid
  • A wire brush or rag
  • The correct wrench

How to Use Teflon Tape, Step by Step

  1. Clean the thread. Remove old tape, dirt, oil and burrs with a wire brush or rag. Dry the thread.
  2. Check it is the right job for tape. Tapered threads (NPT, BSPT) take tape. Parallel threads that seal on a washer or O-ring do not rely on it. Compression fittings do not take tape.
  3. Start at the second thread. Leave the first thread bare so no tape strips off into the line when the fitting goes in.
  4. Wrap clockwise, looking at the pipe end. The tape then tightens as the fitting turns, instead of unwrapping.
  5. Pull firmly. Press the tape into the thread roots so you can see the thread shape through it.
  6. Use 2 to 3 wraps for most small to medium threads. Larger or coarser threads may need more. Do not pile on layers.
  7. Tear, press and smooth. Press the end down so it does not lift.
  8. Assemble. Screw the fitting on by hand, then tighten with a wrench. Do not over-tighten. Tape lubricates, so it is easy to go too far.
  9. Test. Pressure-test the joint and check for leaks before putting the line into service.

Common Mistakes

Mistake Result Fix
Wrapping the wrong direction Tape bunches up or unwinds Wrap clockwise looking at the pipe end
Too much tape Fitting will not seat, or cracks the female part 2 to 3 wraps, check fit
Covering the first thread Tape shreds into the pipe Start at the second thread
Tape on a compression fitting Poor seal Do not use tape there
Wrong tape for gas or oxygen Safety risk Use only tape rated for that service
Re-using old tape Leak Strip and re-wrap

When the Joint Still Leaks

  • Remove the fitting and the old tape.
  • Check the threads for damage.
  • Re-wrap with fresh tape.
  • Check that the thread types match (NPT vs BSP is a common mismatch).
  • Consider a liquid sealant if the fitting maker specifies one.

How to Use Teflon Tape on Larger Threads

On larger pipe threads, the method for how to use Teflon tape is the same, but you may need a wider or denser tape and a few more wraps. Keep the tape tight and even, and check that the fitting still threads on by hand for the first turns.

Choosing Tape Before You Start

Knowing how to use Teflon tape only helps if the tape suits the job. Standard white tape covers general water and air threads. Gas and oxygen lines need tape that is specifically rated and marked for that service. Wider and denser tapes make large threads quicker to wrap. Frequently Asked Questions

Which direction do you wrap Teflon tape?

Clockwise as you look at the end of the pipe, so the tape tightens when the fitting turns on.

How many times do you wrap Teflon tape?

Usually 2 to 3 wraps on small to medium threads. Do not use so much that the fitting will not seat.

Do I wrap Teflon tape over the first thread?

No. Start at the second thread.

Can I use Teflon tape on plastic fittings?

Yes in many cases, but be careful not to over-tighten, because the tape lubricates and plastic can crack.

Can you reuse a fitting after using Teflon tape?

Yes. Strip the old tape, clean the thread and re-wrap.
