PTFE Coating: What It Is, Where It Is Used and Its Limits

Short answer: PTFE coating is a thin layer of PTFE-based material applied to a surface, usually metal, to give it a non-stick, low-friction and chemical-resistant finish. It is applied as a liquid or powder and then baked (sintered) so it fuses into a film.

How PTFE Coating Is Applied

  1. The surface is cleaned and roughened, for example by grit blasting.
  2. A primer is applied.
  3. One or more PTFE topcoats are sprayed or dipped.
  4. The part is baked at high temperature to fuse the coating.

The finished layer is thin, typically tens of microns, so it changes the surface but not the strength of the part underneath.

Where PTFE Coating Is Used

Application Why
Cookware and bakeware Non-stick surface
Valves, fasteners and fittings Low friction and corrosion protection
Hoppers, chutes and moulds Product release
Conveyors and rollers Reduced sticking and wear
Industrial process equipment Chemical resistance

PTFE Coating vs Solid PTFE

PTFE coating Solid PTFE part (sheet, rod, gasket)
What it is Thin film on another material The whole part is PTFE
Strength From the base metal PTFE strength (soft, creeps)
Wear The thin film wears with abrasion Wears slowly because the material runs through
Typical use Surface treatment Gaskets, liners, bearings, seals
Replacement Recoat the part Replace the part

Limits of PTFE Coating

  • Thin film. It can be scratched or worn by abrasive material.
  • Temperature. Stay within the rated range. Overheating degrades PTFE and can release fumes that irritate people and are harmful to pet birds. This is why cookware should not be left heating empty.
  • Adhesion. Surface preparation decides how long the coating lasts.
  • Food contact. Use only coatings certified for food use.

When to Choose Solid PTFE Instead

Choose a solid PTFE part, such as PTFE sheet, PTFE gaskets, a bush or a lined component, when you need a seal, a bearing surface or a chemical barrier thick enough to last, rather than a surface finish on another material. A chute liner cut from PTFE sheet, for example, keeps its non-stick surface even as it slowly wears, while a coated chute needs recoating once the film wears through.

Questions to Answer Before You Decide

  • Is the main need a surface finish, or a seal, bearing or barrier?
  • Will abrasive material run over the surface?
  • What is the maximum operating temperature?
  • Is food contact or high purity required?
  • How will the part be maintained: recoated or replaced?

PTFE Coating or PTFE Liner?

For chutes, hoppers and slides, a bolted or bonded PTFE sheet liner is an alternative to PTFE coating. A liner is thicker, so it lasts longer under abrasive flow and can be replaced without stripping and re-baking the part. PTFE coating is better where the shape is complex, the tolerance is tight or a thin film is all that fits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PTFE coating?

A thin non-stick, low-friction layer of PTFE applied to a surface and baked on.

Is PTFE coating the same as Teflon coating?

In everyday use, yes. Teflon is a brand name for PTFE.

Is PTFE coating safe?

Used within its rated temperature and with a certified grade for food contact, yes. Do not overheat it.

How long does PTFE coating last?

It depends on surface preparation, wear and operating conditions. Abrasive use shortens life.

Can I coat any metal with PTFE?

Most metals can be coated with correct surface preparation. Confirm with the applicator.
