PTFE Envelope Gaskets: What They Are and When to Use Them

Published date 30 October, 2026 | Author Admin
PTFE Envelope Gaskets — Slit, Machined & Folded Types

Short answer: A PTFE envelope gasket has a soft
filler (such as a compressible sheet) wrapped inside a PTFE shell. The
PTFE faces the process fluid and resists chemicals, while the filler
gives the gasket its springiness. It is used on chemical flanges that
need both chemical resistance and a good seal.

Plain PTFE gaskets resist chemicals but can flow under bolt load.
Rubber or fibre gaskets are springy but chemicals can attack them. An
envelope gasket combines both: a protective PTFE jacket around a
compressible core.

Construction

  • Envelope (shell): PTFE, usually machined or folded
to wrap the filler on the faces that touch the fluid.
  • Filler (insert): a compressible material that
supports the gasket and helps it follow the flange. The filler choice
    affects stiffness and temperature limit.
  • Styles: designs differ in how the envelope covers
the inner and outer edge of the gasket. Ask for the style that fits your
    flange.

Where they are used

  • chemical process piping and vessels
  • pharmaceutical and food lines where contamination must be
    avoided
  • glass-lined and uneven flanges, where a soft gasket helps
  • acid and solvent service

Advantages

  • chemical resistance on the wetted face
  • better recovery and sealing than plain PTFE
  • suits lower bolt loads than some metallic gaskets
  • clean and non-contaminating

Limits

  • they cannot match the pressure or temperature capability of
spiral-wound or metal-jacketed gaskets in severe service
  • over-tightening can still crush the envelope
  • the filler sets the working limits, so check the datasheet

Selecting an envelope gasket

  1. Flange standard and size: such as ANSI or DIN, with
    pressure class.
  2. Medium: chemical, concentration and
    temperature.
  3. Flange condition: smooth, uneven or
    glass-lined.
  4. Filler: choose to suit load and temperature.
  5. Style: which edge needs protection.

Installation tips

Clean and inspect the flange faces. Centre the gasket. Tighten bolts
in a cross pattern in stages to the recommended torque. Do not reuse
used gaskets, and re-check bolts after the first thermal cycle if the
procedure calls for it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • using a very hard filler or gasket style on a damaged flange that
    needs a softer seal
  • over-tightening, which crushes the envelope and creates a leak
    path
  • reusing a compressed envelope gasket at the next shutdown
  • ordering without stating the flange standard, so the gasket does not
    match the bolt circle
  • ignoring the filler limits: the PTFE jacket may handle the fluid,
but the filler sets the real temperature and load limit

Inspection after
installation

After the first heat cycle, check for weeping at the joint. If a
joint is retorqued, follow the gasket maker’s instruction. Mark the date
and flange on removed gaskets during a shutdown so you can learn how
they aged, and tell us if a particular joint keeps leaking so we can
look at the style and the flange condition together.

Questions to ask your
supplier

Which filler is inside the envelope, and what temperature and
pressure limit does it set? Is the envelope machined or folded? Does the
style cover the bore, which is the face the fluid touches? Can a drawing
or dimension sheet be provided for approval?

FAQ

What is an envelope gasket? A compressible filler
wrapped in PTFE.

Are envelope gaskets better than plain PTFE gaskets?
For many flanges, yes, because the filler improves sealing and
recovery.

Can envelope gaskets be reused? No. Replace them at
every flange opening.

Do they suit high pressure? They suit moderate
service. For severe duty, consider other gasket types.
