EPDM Rubber Beading and Profiles: Weather Seals That Last

Published date 30 October, 2026 | Author Admin
Epdm rubber beading profile

Short answer: EPDM is a synthetic rubber with
excellent resistance to weather, sunlight, ozone, water and steam. EPDM
beading and profiles are extruded rubber strips and sections used as
door, window, cabinet, vehicle and panel seals, edge trims and gaskets.
They last outdoors for years but should not be used with mineral oils or
fuels.

What is a profile?

A rubber profile is rubber extruded through a die so it has a
constant cross-section, such as a solid cord, a hollow bulb, a D-shape,
a channel (U) or a lip seal. Beading is a common name for simple strips
and cords. The shape is chosen for the job: bulbs compress to seal a
gap, channels grip an edge, and flat strips fill gaps.

Why EPDM

  • excellent resistance to weather, ozone and UV
  • good resistance to water, steam and many dilute chemicals
  • stays flexible in cold and hot conditions
  • good electrical insulation
  • long outdoor life without cracking

Limits

  • not for mineral oils, fuels and greases, which swell it
  • poor bonding to some materials without the right adhesive
  • not suited to long-term contact with strong solvents

Typical uses

Application Why EPDM
Door and window seals Weather resistance and flexibility
Cabinet and panel gaskets Compression sealing
Glass glazing seals Weather and UV resistance
Edge trim and protection Channel profiles grip edges
Water and HVAC seals Water and heat resistance

Choosing a profile

  1. Gap and compression: measure the gap the seal must
fill and how far it will be compressed.
  2. Shape: solid, hollow, D, P, channel, or
    custom.
  3. Hardness: softer for easy closing, harder for
    load.
  4. Fixing method: push-in, adhesive backing, channel
    grip or clip.
  5. Length and joining: supplied in coils or cut
lengths, with joints bonded or vulcanised for corners.

Cutting, joining and fitting

Cut strips with a sharp blade for a clean, square end. To make a
frame, mitre the corners and join with a rubber adhesive made for EPDM.
Do not stretch the strip while fitting, since it will shrink back and
open a gap at corners. Clean the surface before using adhesive.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • using EPDM where it will touch oil or fuel
  • buying a profile without measuring the actual gap
  • stretching the profile during fitting
  • using the wrong adhesive
  • ignoring compression, so the seal is either too loose or too tight
    to close the door

Questions to ask your
supplier

Can profiles be matched to a sample or drawing? What hardness is
offered? Are standard shapes available in stock? Can you supply cut
lengths or joined frames? Is adhesive tape backing available?

Standard shapes you may need

Common shapes include solid round cord, hollow bulb, D-section,
P-section, flat strip, U-channel for edges and flag or fin seals for
glazing. If you are replacing an existing seal, send a short sample or a
photo of the cut end with a ruler beside it. A cross-section drawing
with dimensions is even better.

Weather and service life

EPDM profiles on doors and windows in direct sun age slowly, but
dust, cleaning chemicals and constant flexing eventually harden the
rubber. Inspect seals yearly, and replace them when they crack, flatten
or no longer spring back, since a failed seal lets in dust, water and
noise.

FAQ

What is EPDM beading used for? Weather seals, edge
trims and gaskets on doors, windows and panels.

Is EPDM good outdoors? Yes. It resists sun, ozone
and weather very well.

Can EPDM be used with oil? No. Use NBR for oils.

Can you match a sample profile? Send a sample or
drawing of the section.
