Crane Wear Pads and Pulleys: Materials, Wear and Replacement

Short answer: Crane wear pads (slide pads) sit
between telescopic boom sections so they slide smoothly without
metal-to-metal contact, and plastic pulleys guide wire rope with less
wear. They are made from engineering plastics such as nylon, UHMWPE or
filled grades. Replace them when worn, and always match the profile and
material to the crane maker’s requirements.

What wear pads do

In a telescopic boom, each section slides inside the one before it.
Wear pads fixed between sections carry the sliding load, keep the
sections aligned and prevent steel scraping steel. Worn pads let the
boom sag or rattle, increase wear on the boom itself and can make
extension rough. Pads are designed to wear instead of the boom, so they
are replaced regularly.

Pulleys and sheaves

Pulleys (sheaves) guide wire rope over bends. Plastic pulleys, often
made from nylon or polyurethane-type materials, are lighter than steel
and are kinder to wire rope, reducing rope wear. Replacement depends on
the crane model, the rope diameter and the groove profile. Always check
the exact requirement.

Materials used

  • Nylon (cast or extruded): tough, wear resistant,
widely used for boom pads and pulleys. Absorbs moisture, so size can
    change slightly.
  • UHMWPE: very low friction and wear, used where
sliding is long and load moderate.
  • Filled and lubricated grades: such as oil-filled
nylon or molybdenum disulphide nylon for lower friction.
  • Other engineering plastics: chosen by the crane
maker for the load and conditions.

Material choice depends on the load per pad, the temperature in the
working environment (Saudi Arabia is hot) and the type of boom. Do not
change materials without checking with the crane manufacturer or a
competent engineer.

How to order replacement
pads

Cranes are safety-critical, so the correct part matters. Send:

  1. crane make, model and serial number
  2. boom section positions of the pads
  3. a drawing, or the old pad as a sample
  4. dimensions, hole positions and thickness
  5. the material you want or the original specification

If you are unsure of the material, tell us the operating conditions
and we will advise on grades. Machined pads can be made to match your
sample or drawing.

Inspection and replacement

Inspect pads regularly. Replace them when they are worn to the limit
stated by the crane maker, cracked, deformed or heavily scored, or when
the boom sections show side-to-side movement. Replace pads in sets, so
wear is even, and record replacement dates. Grease and clean boom
sections according to the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • fitting pads of the wrong thickness, so the boom binds or
    rattles
  • changing to a different material without approval
  • replacing only one pad where the set is worn
  • ignoring heat, which softens some plastics
  • delaying replacement until the boom is damaged

Questions to ask your
supplier

Can you machine pads to my sample or drawing? What materials do you
recommend for hot conditions? What tolerance can you hold? Can pads be
supplied with holes and countersinks? Is documentation available for the
material?

FAQ

What are crane wear pads? Plastic pads that let
telescopic boom sections slide without steel touching steel.

What material is used? Mostly nylon or UHMWPE,
depending on the design.

How often do wear pads need replacing? It depends on
use. Inspect them regularly and replace at the wear limit.

Can you make pads to a sample? Send the sample or a
drawing for a quote.
