UHMWPE Fender Pads and PE Dock Bumpers: Protecting Quays, Vessels and Docks

Short answer: UHMWPE fender pads are low-friction
facing panels fixed to the front of marine fenders, so vessels slide
along the quay without abrading the hull or the fender. PE dock bumpers
protect loading docks and walls from truck and trailer impact. Both use
polyethylene’s toughness, low friction, chemical resistance and
resistance to water.

Marine fender pads

A marine fender absorbs the energy when a ship berths. The front of
the fender is exposed to sliding contact with the hull, which can scrape
paint, tear rubber and wear the fender face. A UHMWPE facing pad is
fitted to the front so the ship slides on a slippery, durable surface.
UHMWPE also resists seawater, does not rot and is hard to damage, so the
pads last a long time in marine conditions. See UHMWPE guide.

Pads are usually cut from thick sheets and fixed to the fender frame
with bolts or studs. Sizes, thickness, hole layout and countersinks
depend on the fender design, so send a drawing or dimensions.

PE dock bumpers

At loading docks, trucks and trailers back into the dock and can
damage walls, doors and the vehicle. Dock bumpers are thick blocks fixed
to the dock face to absorb and spread impact. PE dock bumpers are tough,
do not rot or rust, resist weather and chemicals, and are easy to cut
and drill. They suit warehouses, distribution centres and factories.

Key properties that matter

  • impact resistance, even in cold or hot conditions
  • very low water absorption
  • good abrasion resistance
  • resistance to seawater, many chemicals and weathering when
    stabilised
  • low friction on the UHMWPE face for marine sliding contact

Choosing size and thickness

  1. Fender or bumper design: check dimensions and
    fixing holes.
  2. Impact energy: heavier vessels or trucks need
    thicker, stronger bumpers.
  3. Environment: marine, UV, chemicals.
  4. Colour: black UV-stabilised for outdoor use; other
    colours for visibility at docks.
  5. Fixing: use stainless steel or suitably coated
bolts, with counterbores so heads stay below the surface.

Fixing tips

Allow for thermal expansion with slotted holes or oversize holes. Use
washers to spread the clamping load. Do not over-tighten so the plastic
crushes. For marine pads, use corrosion-resistant fasteners.

Inspection

Check regularly for cracked, worn or loose pads and replace worn ones
before the structure behind them is damaged. Keep a record of when pads
were installed and how fast they wear to plan replacements.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • fixing pads rigidly with no allowance for expansion
  • using fasteners that rust and stain or fail
  • choosing too thin a bumper for heavy impact
  • using a colour that fades or a grade that is not UV-stabilised
  • confusing marine fender pads with UHMWPE outrigger pads, which are a
    different product

Questions to ask your
supplier

Can pads be cut to my drawing with holes and countersinks? What
thickness is recommended? Is the grade UV-stabilised? What colours are
available? Can you supply fixings or advise on them?

Planning an order

For fender pads, send the fender drawing or dimensions, the number of
pads, the hole layout and whether you want countersinks or counterbores.
For dock bumpers, measure the dock face, the number of bumpers per door
and the thickness you need. Black UV-stabilised material is usual for
outdoor jobs. Supply lead times depend on size and quantity, so share
your schedule early.

FAQ

What is a fender pad? A low-friction facing panel on
a marine fender.

Why UHMWPE for fenders? Low friction, abrasion
resistance and durability in seawater.

What are dock bumpers for? To protect loading docks
and vehicles from impact.

Can pads be cut to size? Yes. Send your drawing.
