Troter Genius + SonicBase: Building a Gym Floor in Two Layers

Published date 03 November, 2026 | Author Admin
Troter Genius 7MM tile on SonicBase gym floor underlay

A gym floor underlay is the part of a weight-room floor that nobody sees and everybody hears. In a project made in Austria, the client placed SonicBase down under Troter Genius 7MM in grey. The two layers do different jobs: the tile on top gives the surface its resistance and finish, and the base underneath absorbs the shock of heavy weights hitting the floor. Here is what each layer does and when a gym needs both.

Anatomy of the floor

Think of the floor as two layers stacked under the point of impact:

  • Layer 1, the surface: Troter Genius 7MM. A very versatile floor with great resistance, specially designed for work areas with medium weights and all types of machinery. In the Austrian project it was installed in grey, in 100 x 100 cm tiles with a puzzle ending.
  • Layer 2, the foundation: SonicBase. A gym floor underlay engineered to absorb shocks from heavy weights, minimising vibration and noise, with straight cut edges for seamless alignment under the tile.

SonicBase at a glance

  • Thickness: 15 mm or 30 mm, chosen to suit your needs and the loads in the area.
  • Tile size: 115 x 185 cm, so the base goes down quickly over a large floor.
  • Straight cut at the sides, so the base panels butt together without gaps and the 7MM tile sits flat on top.

Why a two-layer floor instead of one thick tile

A single thick rubber tile has to do two jobs at once: give a hard-wearing surface and soak up impact. A two-layer system separates them. The 7MM tile stays thin, stable and easy to clean, and the gym floor underlay beneath it takes the energy of the drop. The result is less vibration passing into the slab and less noise reaching the rooms next door or the floor below. It also keeps the floor height consistent: the base can be laid only where weights are dropped, with the same Troter Genius tile running across the whole room on top.

Where to use SonicBase

SonicBase is for the parts of a gym where heavy weights are dropped: deadlift and Olympic lifting platforms, free-weight areas with loaded barbells, and CrossFit-style boxes. For areas with medium weights, machines, cardio and functional training, Troter Genius, Marbled Troter and MUSA 7MM tiles are prepared to work on their own; see our overview of Bunde’s three 7MM tiles.

Planning the combination

The practical questions are simple: which areas take dropped weights, how heavy the loads are, and whether the floor sits above another occupied space. Those answers decide where the base goes and whether 15 mm or 30 mm is the right thickness. Diode Trading EST supplies both Troter Genius and SonicBase in Saudi Arabia through its partnership with Elaf Rubber, Bunde’s exclusive distributor for the Middle East, with samples, technical support and installation guidance. FAQs

Q1: What is SonicBase?

SonicBase is Bunde Flooring’s shock-absorbing gym floor underlay. It is placed under the 7MM tile to absorb shocks from heavy weights, minimising vibration and noise. It comes in 15 mm or 30 mm thickness and 115 x 185 cm panels with straight cut edges.

Q2: Do I need a gym floor underlay under the whole gym?

No. SonicBase is only needed where heavy weights are dropped. The 7MM tile on its own is prepared for medium weights, machines, cardio and functional areas.

Q3: Which tile goes on top of SonicBase?

Troter Genius 7MM is the usual choice, as in the Austrian project, in grey. Marbled Troter and MUSA share the same 7MM format and can also be used.
