Short answer: PTFE rod is solid Teflon bar used as
stock for turning bushes, seals, insulators and spacers. When the part
is complex or repeated, ordering PTFE machined components to your
drawing is simpler. Give the grade, drawing, tolerances and quantity,
and allow for PTFE’s softness and thermal movement.

PTFE rod comes in many diameters and is the raw material for most
small PTFE parts. Machined components are finished parts cut from that
rod, from sheet or from tube.

to buy parts

Buy rod when your workshop machines parts regularly
and wants flexible stock.
Buy machined components when you need a finished
part to drawing, such as a bush, ring, seat, insulator or custom spacer,
and do not want to machine it yourself.

Things to decide before

Surface finish: specify if a smooth finish
matters.
Quantity: repeat orders reduce set-up cost per

Machining tips for PTFE

Use sharp tools with positive rake and light cuts.
Support thin sections so they do not deflect.
Let the part reach room temperature before final measurement, since
heat from cutting changes the size.
Avoid gripping hard on the chuck because the part can distort.
Deburr edges gently.

Design notes

PTFE creeps under steady load, so design bearing surfaces with enough
area. Allow for thermal expansion in housings. Do not rely on PTFE

Store rods flat and supported along their length. Keep them clean and
