Chevron Belt for Steep Incline vs Steel Cord Belts

Published date 31 October, 2026 | Author Admin

Short answer: A chevron belt for steep incline carries loose material up slopes that would make a flat belt slip, using raised V-shaped ribs that grip the load. A steel cord belt for long distance carries very high tension with little stretch. The two solve different problems: chevron for steep, short lifts and steel cord for long, high-capacity conveyors.

Conveyor designers face two common limits: slope and length. Flat belts lose their load on steep slopes, and fabric belts stretch too much over long distances. These two belt types are the usual answers.

Chevron belt for steep incline

A chevron belt for steep incline has V-shaped rubber cleats moulded on the top cover. The ribs stop material from rolling back and make it possible to lift loose material, such as grain, sand, aggregate, fertiliser or packaged goods, at angles well above the limit of a smooth belt.

The maximum angle depends on the rib height and pattern, the material (dry, wet, lumpy or fine), belt speed and loading method. Always take the permitted angle from the belt maker’s data for your material and pattern.

Inclined conveyor chevron belt: design points

  • Rib height: taller ribs hold more material on steeper slopes but need larger pulleys.
  • Pulley diameter: the belt must bend round the pulley without cracking the ribs.
  • Cleaning: ribs trap material, so scrapers and cleaning arrangements need care.
  • Loading: feed the belt gently and at a controlled rate to avoid roll-back.
  • Open or closed pattern: open-pattern belts shed fines; closed patterns hold finer material.

An inclined conveyor chevron belt also needs the right idlers on the return side so the ribs do not wear on the rollers.

Steel cord belt for long distance

A steel cord belt has parallel steel cables embedded in rubber instead of fabric plies. Steel is very strong and hardly stretches, so the belt can handle high tension over long runs. This is why a steel cord belt for long distance is used on overland conveyors in mines, ports and large bulk handling plants.

Long distance steel cord conveyor belts: key facts

Long distance steel cord conveyor belts offer several benefits:

  • High breaking strength for heavy loads and long centres.
  • Low elongation, so take-up travel is small.
  • Long service life when properly maintained.
  • Suitable for single-flight conveyors covering many kilometres.

The trade-offs are higher cost, the need for specialist vulcanised splicing, and sensitivity to impact damage that can cut cords. Corrosion of exposed cords after a cut is another concern, so repair damage quickly.

Belt Strength Best for Watch out for
Chevron (fabric carcass) Moderate Steep, short lifts with loose material Cleaning and pulley size
Smooth fabric belt Moderate General horizontal and gentle slopes Slip on steep inclines
Steel cord Very high Long, high-tension conveyors Cost, splicing, cord damage

Can you combine the two?

Sometimes. A steel cord carcass can have a profiled cover for steep slopes, but this is a specialist design. Ask the belt manufacturer through your supplier.

Choosing between the two for your project

Start with the geometry. If the conveyor is short and steep, such as lifting material from a hopper to a higher bin, a chevron belt is the practical answer and a steel cord belt is not needed. If the conveyor is a long overland line with high capacity, the main concern is tension and stretch, which points to steel cord. For mid-length conveyors on moderate slopes, a standard fabric belt with the right cover is often enough and is cheaper than either.

Be honest about the material. Wet, sticky or fine material changes how much grip a chevron pattern gives, and a rough estimate of angle can lead to spillage and roll-back. If the belt will carry bagged or packaged goods, tell the supplier, since the pattern and rib height are chosen differently from bulk material.

Maintenance notes

  • Check rib wear and cracking at the pulleys on chevron belts.
  • Inspect steel cord belts with cord-detection systems or visual checks of the splice zone.
  • Keep the belt clean at all times; build-up on ribs and pulleys causes tracking trouble.
  • Replace worn scrapers promptly, since they protect the belt cover.

Splices on profiled and steel cord belts

Profiled belts are spliced like other belts, but the ribs must line up across the joint so the pattern continues. Steel cord belts need a specialist vulcanised splice with carefully staggered cords. A poor splice is the most common reason these belts fail early, so use trained staff and follow the maker’s procedure.

FAQ

What incline can a chevron belt handle?

It depends on the pattern, material and speed. Check the manufacturer’s data for your case.

Can chevron belts carry wet material?

Wet or sticky material reduces grip and angle capacity, so tell the supplier.
