Short answer: To order pipes, fittings and flanges correctly, specify the material, nominal size, wall thickness or schedule, pressure class, the governing standard and the quantity. Ask for the Material Test Certificate with every order. Missing any one of these can mean the wrong part arrives, which costs more than the part itself.
Pipes, fittings and flanges are standard items, but small differences matter: a flange of the right size but the wrong pressure class will not mate, and a pipe of the right diameter but the wrong wall thickness will not carry the required pressure. A clear specification avoids most mistakes.
What to specify
- Item and form: pipe, elbow, tee, reducer, cap, flange or other fitting, and for flanges the type (weld neck, slip-on, blind, threaded and so on).
- Material: carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy or plastic. The material depends on the fluid, temperature and corrosion risk.
- Nominal size: the pipe size designation. For fittings and flanges, confirm it matches the pipe it will join.
- Wall thickness or schedule: for pipe and butt-weld fittings, this sets the pressure capacity.
- Pressure class or rating: for flanges and many fittings.
- Standard: the dimensional and material standard your project or site follows. Common systems include ASME and EN standards, but your drawings and specification decide.
- Facing and end type: raised face, flat face, plain end, beveled end or threaded.
- Quantity and delivery location.
- Documents: material test certificate and any other documents your project requires.
Matching components to each other
Parts must match across all these points. A flange, gasket, bolting and the mating flange all need the same size, class and facing. Pipe and weld-neck flanges must match wall thickness at the weld end. If you are repairing an existing line, check the markings on the old parts and the line list or drawing.
Pressure class and schedule explained simply
The pressure class of a flange or the schedule of a pipe tells you how much pressure and temperature it can handle. Higher class or heavier wall means higher capacity, but also more weight and cost. The engineer sets the required class from the process conditions; do not change it without approval.
Materials in brief
Carbon steel is common for general service. Stainless steel resists corrosion and is used for chemical, food and water treatment applications. Other alloys and plastics suit specific fluids and conditions. Choose according to the fluid, temperature, pressure and corrosion risk, and follow your specification.
Gaskets, bolting and the full joint
A flange joint also needs a gasket and bolts. The gasket material depends on the fluid and temperature. See gasket selection guide, ready-cut gaskets, graphite gaskets and PTFE gaskets. Ask for the bolting that suits your flange class.
Documents and traceability
Material test certificates link a batch of material to its test results and are often required on industrial projects. Diode Trading EST ships every order with a Material Test Certificate. If your site needs additional documents, tell us when you enquire.
Common mistakes to avoid
- ordering by pipe diameter alone, without the wall thickness
- mixing flange pressure classes or facings
- forgetting gaskets and bolting
- changing material without engineering approval
- not stating the standard
What to send with an enquiry
A list or sketch with the item, material, size, schedule or wall, pressure class, standard, facing, quantity and delivery location. If you are matching existing parts, send photos and markings.
Diode Trading EST stocks pipes, pipe fittings and flanges at its Dammam warehouse for dispatch across Saudi Arabia. Tell us the material, size, pressure class and quantity and we will confirm availability and send a quotation. Request a quote.
