Engineering Plastics Comparison: UHMWPE vs HDPE vs Nylon vs PTFE vs POM

Compare the properties of the engineering plastics we stock side by side. Pick two to five materials to see density, strength, temperature range, friction, water absorption, wear and chemical resistance, dimensional stability and relative cost, with a link to each full datasheet.

How to choose the right material

  • Sliding wear and impact (chutes, liners, wear strips, outrigger pads): UHMWPE (PE1000) has the best abrasion resistance and impact strength with low friction.
  • Chemical tanks and fabrication: HDPE (PE300) and PP are economical, weldable and resist most acids and alkalis.
  • Gears, bushes and rollers: Nylon PA6 is tough and wear resistant; choose POM or PET where tight tolerances matter, because nylon absorbs moisture.
  • Precision machined parts: POM (acetal) and PET hold dimensions best and machine cleanly.
  • High temperature or aggressive chemicals: PTFE works from -200 °C to +260 °C and resists almost all chemicals; PEEK adds high strength up to +250 °C.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between UHMWPE and HDPE?

Both are polyethylene, but UHMWPE (PE1000) has a much higher molecular weight. It has far better abrasion and impact resistance and lower friction (0.10–0.20 vs 0.25–0.30 on steel). HDPE (PE300) is cheaper, easier to weld and suits tanks, food surfaces and general fabrication.

Is nylon or POM better for bushes?

Nylon PA6 is tougher and better for shock loads, but it absorbs up to about 9% water, which changes its size. POM absorbs less than 1% and keeps close tolerances, so it is better for precision bushes.

Which plastic handles the highest temperature?

PTFE handles up to about +260 °C continuous and PEEK about +250 °C. UHMWPE and HDPE are limited to about +80 °C.
