They solve different problems. Pick fire resistant for coal and dusty, enclosed duty, and heat resistant for hot clinker, ash or sinter.
Fire resistant and heat resistant are often confused. A heat resistant belt keeps its strength at high material temperatures. A fire resistant belt is made to limit the spread of flame if a fire starts, for example from a seized roller or friction heating.
Coal is flammable, and coal dust can burn or explode in the wrong conditions. A fire resistant belt for coal handling uses special flame-retardant rubber or PVC covers that resist ignition and self-extinguish when the flame source is removed. These belts are used in power plants, coal stockyards, ports and mines.
A coal handling fire resistant conveyor belt is normally tested to a recognised standard, such as ISO 340 for flammability or equivalents set by the mine or plant owner. Buyers should not assume a belt is fire resistant because it is black or labelled as such. Ask for the test standard and the supplier’s datasheet or certificate for the exact belt, and check that it matches your plant’s requirement.
Many fire resistant belts are also anti-static, so that static charge does not build up and spark in dusty areas. If you need this, say so when you ask for a quote.
A heat resistant belt for clinker is designed to carry hot material, with heat-tolerant compounds and carcass. It does not automatically self-extinguish, and a fire resistant belt does not automatically handle hot clinker. If your plant needs both, ask about belts rated for heat and flame together.

Belt choice is one layer of protection, not a replacement for good housekeeping and detection.
Many industrial sites handle both coal and hot material. A power plant, for instance, moves coal on fire resistant belts and removes hot ash on heat resistant belts. A cement plant may use coal as fuel but clinker as product. Treat each conveyor as its own case and write the requirement per conveyor, not per site. That way you buy the right belt for each duty and avoid paying for properties you do not need.

Even the best belt will burn if fire is fed long enough by coal dust and spillage. Sites that handle coal usually combine the belt with fire detection along the conveyor, water spray or fire-suppression points, and strict cleaning routines. Treat the fire resistant rating as one layer of a wider fire plan, and check what your insurer or site code expects.
