Polyurethane (PU) Rods, Sheets, Bushes, Wheels & Rollers

Technical Specification

Also Known As PU, polyurethane elastomer, urethane
Form Rods, Sheets, Bushes, Tubing / Cords, Strips, Wheels / Rollers, Moulded parts
Key Properties Outstanding abrasion resistance, high load-bearing capacity, good tear and cut resistance, wide hardness range (soft to hard Shore A grades), good oil and grease resistance
Typical Uses Wheels and rollers, wear strips and liners, scraper blades, coupling spiders, bushes, buffers and seals
Supply Standard stock shapes, or machined / moulded components as per drawing

Key Benefits of Polyurethane (PU)

Polyurethane bridges the gap between rubber and plastic — elastic like rubber but far tougher. Key benefits include:

  • Exceptional Abrasion Resistance: Typically outlasts rubber in sliding, impact and wear applications.
  • High Load-Bearing Capacity: Carries heavy loads in wheels, rollers and buffers without permanent deformation.
  • Wide Hardness Range: Available from soft, flexible grades to hard, rigid grades to suit the job.
  • Oil and Grease Resistance: Performs well in workshop and machinery environments.

For parts exposed to constant moisture or hot water, see our HPU (hydrolysis-resistant polyurethane) grade.

Common Applications of Polyurethane

PU products are used across material handling, mining, oil and gas and general manufacturing, including:

  • Wheels, rollers and pulley linings for trolleys and conveyors
  • Wear strips, liners and chute linings
  • Scraper and squeegee blades
  • Coupling spiders and flexible elements
  • Bushes, buffers and anti-vibration pads
  • Round and V-belt cords for light conveyors

Polyurethane Products We Supply

  • PU rods — solid round bars for machining
  • PU sheets — in various thicknesses and hardnesses
  • PU bushes — hollow bars and finished bushes
  • PU tubing and cords — including round belt cord
  • PU strips, wheels and rollers — including PU-coated wheels and rollers on bearings
  • Machined and moulded PU components — made to your drawing

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Is polyurethane better than rubber?

A. For abrasion, cutting and load-bearing applications, polyurethane usually lasts considerably longer than rubber. Rubber can still be the better choice for some sealing and high-temperature uses.

Q2. What hardness of PU do I need?

A. Softer grades suit seals, buffers and grip surfaces; harder grades suit wheels, rollers and wear parts. Tell us the application and we will recommend a grade.

Q3. Can you make PU wheels and rollers to size?

A. Yes. We supply PU wheels and rollers, and can mould or machine PU parts to your drawing.

Q4. Does polyurethane resist water?

A. Standard PU can degrade with long-term exposure to hot water or high humidity. For those conditions we recommend hydrolysis-resistant HPU.
