PVC Rods & Sheets — Complete Guide for Industrial Buyers

Published date 07 October, 2026 | Author Admin

PVC is one of the most economical chemical-resistant plastics for industrial fabrication. PVC rods and sheets are used to build tanks, ducts, fume extraction systems, electroplating equipment, machine guards, signage and chemical-handling parts. This guide covers the main PVC types, their properties and limits, and practical fabrication tips for buyers in Saudi Arabia.

Types of PVC Stock Shapes

Rigid PVC (PVC-U)

Unplasticised PVC is the standard grey or dark grey industrial grade. It offers good stiffness and excellent resistance to many acids, alkalis and salts. It is supplied as sheets, rods and welding rods.

PVC-C (Chlorinated PVC)

Higher temperature resistance than PVC-U, so it is used for hot chemical lines and tanks where PVC-U would soften.

PVC Foam Sheet

Lightweight closed-cell sheet used for signage, display, partitions and interior panels. It is easy to cut, print and fabricate.

Flexible PVC

Plasticised sheet and rolls used for strip curtains, protective covers and flexible barriers. See PVC Curtains.

Key Properties of Rigid PVC

  • Resistance to many acids, alkalis and salt solutions at ambient temperature
  • Good stiffness and strength for a low-cost plastic
  • Self-extinguishing behaviour; PVC does not readily sustain a flame
  • Easy to cut, machine, bend with heat, weld and solvent-bond
  • Good electrical insulation

Limits

  • Temperature: PVC-U is generally limited to about 60°C in service. Use PVC-C, PP or PVDF for hotter duties.
  • Solvents: attacked by aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, ketones and esters.
  • Impact at low temperature: rigid PVC becomes brittle in cold conditions.
  • UV: extended outdoor exposure can cause discolouration and embrittlement unless the grade is stabilised.

Typical Applications

  • Chemical storage and process tanks
  • Fume ducts and scrubbers
  • Electroplating and pickling equipment
  • Water treatment components
  • Machine guards and covers
  • Machined valve parts, spacers and insulators from rod
  • Signage and displays (foam sheet)

Fabrication Tips

  • Welding: rigid PVC is joined by hot-gas welding with matching PVC welding rods. See our PVC welding rods guide.
  • Solvent cementing: use the correct PVC solvent cement for pipe and fitting joints.
  • Bending: sheet can be heated and line-bent for tanks and covers.
  • Machining: use sharp tools and avoid heat build-up; rigid PVC cuts cleanly.

PVC vs PP vs PVDF

For chemical fabrication, PP offers better impact strength and a higher temperature limit than PVC-U, while PVDF offers excellent chemical and temperature resistance at a higher cost. PVC remains the economical choice for ambient-temperature chemical duty and where flame behaviour matters. See PP Sheets & Rods and PVDF Sheets & Rods.

Ordering Information

Specify grade (PVC-U, PVC-C, foam or flexible), colour, thickness or diameter, sheet size and quantity. Stock sizes vary, so contact us to confirm availability. Every order from Diode is supplied with a Material Test Certificate.

Storage and Handling

Store PVC sheets flat on a level, supported surface to prevent bowing, and keep them out of direct sunlight until use. Leave the protective film in place during fabrication to avoid scratches on visible faces. In cooler conditions, handle rigid sheets carefully because they are more brittle, and avoid dropping them on edges or corners. Rods should be stored horizontally on racks with enough supports to prevent sagging over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum temperature for rigid PVC sheet?

PVC-U is generally limited to about 60°C in service; PVC-C is used for higher temperatures.

Can PVC sheets be welded?

Yes. Rigid PVC is hot-gas welded using matching PVC welding rods.

Is PVC resistant to acids?

Rigid PVC resists many acids, alkalis and salts at ambient temperature, but not many organic solvents.

What is PVC foam sheet used for?

Signage, displays, partitions and lightweight interior panels.
