Skived vs Molded vs Expanded PTFE Sheet — What’s the Difference

Published date 03 October, 2026 | Author Admin

“PTFE sheet” isn’t one product — skived, molded, and expanded PTFE sheet are made through three different manufacturing processes, PTFE Engineering Plastics Riyadh and each results in different mechanical properties, even though the base material is the same PTFE resin.

The Three Processes Compared

Process How It’s Made Best For
Skived A large PTFE billet is peeled Large-format, thin,

Process How It’s Made Best For
(skived) into thin continuous sheet, like peeling a log of veneer consistent gauge sheet
Molded PTFE is compression molded into a block, then machined/sliced to thickness Thicker sheet, tighter dimensional tolerance
Expanded (ePTFE) PTFE is mechanically expanded, creating a porous, highly compressible structure Gasket sheet needing high conformability on imperfect flange surfaces

Skived PTFE Sheet

Skiving produces continuous, wide-format sheet in consistent thin gauges, making it the common choice for large area lining and general fabrication stock where a big continuous sheet is more practical than smaller molded pieces.

Molded PTFE Sheet

Molded sheet is produced in thicker gauges PTFE Engineering Plastics Jeddah with tighter dimensional control, generally used where thickness consistency and dimensional precision matter more than sheet size — such as gasket stock for precision cutting.

Expanded PTFE (ePTFE) Sheet / Gasket

Expanded PTFE has a porous, highly compressible structure that conforms readily to imperfect or damaged flange surfaces — a genuine advantage for older piping systems or flanges that aren’t perfectly flat, where standard skived or molded sheet gaskets might not seal reliably.
